Presbyterian Medical Services designs and delivers quality, accessible, integrated health, education, and human services in response to identified community needs of the multi-cultural people of the Southwest. Presbyterian Medical Services is the extension of the medical mission work of the Board of National Missions of the United Presbyterian Church, begun in 1901 with the establishment of the Sage Memorial Hospital on the Navajo Reservation in Ganado, Arizona. The medical mission in rural, Northern New Mexico/Southern Colorado began with the establishment of the Dixon Cottage Clinic in 1911, when missionary physician, Sarah Bowen, M.D., en route to return to work in China, stopped in the area to assess medical problems in Presbyterian Church schools in Northern New Mexico.
